The vison of the Grace House started as a community vision lead by Bill Mitchell. Bill saw the need for recovery support as he visited people in jail. Bill reached out to Judge Sabrina Bell and other community and church leaders with his long-term vision of love and support to people in the thralls of addiction and their families. For one year meetings were held monthly at Hillview Christian Church with strong attendance and community support at every meeting. Committees were created and a Board of Directors was formed. Suggestions for a name were requested from the community and a highly creative Crawford county resident submitted the name Giving Recovery A Chance Everyday- GRACE…it was a winner! Eighteen months later, with Mary Hoffman leading the charge, we opened GRACE House, a 6-bed woman’s Recovery Program. The overwhelming support from the community has allowed us to stay up and running.
Our Women’s Recovery Residence operating for two years helped more than 30 women with recovery from substance use. Seeds were planted and families reunited. Our Recovery Residence had some challenges with the State of Indiana which have since been resolved. But during those State challenges, we and with remarkable collaboration from a neighboring addiction recovery residence, we moved our women over to the Genesis House, a new women’s recovery residence located in Corydon, Indiana in September 2020. The six women who moved completed our program by the end of 2020.
As we moved forward, our organization grew into GRACE. We not only operated the Grace House, but we began our GED program, mentoring program, and on March 15, 2020 we opened our Recovery Resource Center.
Early 2020 hit GRACE the same way it hit the rest of the world with the pandemic. Looking forward to good things happening in 2021, as we reopen our Resource Center to 12 Step Meetings, GED classes and Peer Recovery Coaching. We are continuing our mentoring and High School Equivalency (GED) program for jail inmates. More information will be updated on our website and Facebook page.
GRACE House reopened August 2021 as a men’s recovery residence and is currently accepting applications.
